Challenges Faced by DRCit! Before Working with Ninja Tropic
The DRCit! initiative faced a fundamental challenge in the field of disaster education: the target audience was not captive. Unlike corporate compliance training where completion is mandatory, DRCit!’s learners — community practitioners, emergency managers, and the general public — had to choose to engage. Content that felt academic, preachy, or difficult to navigate would simply be abandoned.

Disaster preparedness, mitigation, and response involve complex systems thinking that can’t be reduced to a checklist — but the content had to be accessible enough to serve a broad public audience that included people with no formal emergency management background.
Ninja Tropic's Customized Interactive Video Approach
Ninja Tropic conducted extensive learner research to understand the demographics, prior knowledge, and motivational drivers of DRCit!’s target audience before developing a single frame of animation. This research directly shaped the instructional design: learning objectives were framed around practical decisions individuals face before and during disasters, rather than abstract principles.
The animated series featured a diverse cast of characters representing real community demographics, each navigating realistic disaster scenarios informed by actual case studies from the Disaster Research Center’s institutional knowledge. 2D and 3D animation techniques were combined to create visual variety across the modules, with accessibility features including closed captions, screen-reader compatibility, and adjustable playback integrated throughout.
